BOX SCORESWARTHMORE, Pa – The 31st-ranked Swarthmore College men's tennis team (5-5) upset No. 20 Washington & Lee by a score of 7-2 on Saturday, March 26.
The Garnet first won all three matches to sweep doubles play. Senior
John Larkin and sophomore
Blake Oetting paired at the No. 3 position to rout Justin Gillette and Michael Lukas, 8-3. At No. 1, sophomores
Mark Fallati and
Josh Powell defeated Thomas Johnson and Will Bannister, 8-5, while sophomore
Ari Cepelewicz and freshman
Simon Vernier triumphed over Zack Ely and Joe Siami by the same score at No. 2.
Swarthmore carried its momentum into singles action, where No. 6 Powell claimed his second win, giving up only one game to Jason Renner, 6-0, 6-1. Freshman
James Hahn next clinched the team win with his 6-1, 6-1 victory over Gillette. Both Fallati and Cepelewicz secured double wins as well at No. 1 and No. 3, respectively, to add to Swarthmore's total. Fallati recorded a 6-4, 7-5 result over Johnson, while Cepelewicz closed out the match, 7-6 (7-5), 6-1, against Siami.
Swarthmore returns to action next Saturday, Apr. 2 to face conference rival Johns Hopkins University. Play begins at 12:00 p.m. at the Faulkner Courts.
