COLLEGEVILLE, Pa.—Swarthmore College Men's Lacrosse slipped in the Centennial Conference opener on Saturday, losing to the Ursinus College Bears 18-8. Swarthmore is now 4-2 on the year; Ursinus improved to 6-1.
Matt Johnson returned to the Garnet lineup after missing the past two games with injury and dropped in a team-high three goals. Johnson also registered an assist to provide a total of four points in the game.
Cam Marsh added a pair of goals, and Alex Mandel, Will Black and Griffin Johnston each scored as well.
Cole Fox recorded 13 saves in goal for Swarthmore.
Defensively, Eric Levin led the Garnet with two caused turnovers and also had a team-best seven ground balls.
Offensive opportunities favored the Bears who took 45 shots to Swarthmore's 25.
The Garnet scored first on Saturday. Alex Mandel set up Griffin Johnston for the goal less than two minutes into the first quarter. The Bears pulled away with a 9-1 run that stretched into the second quarter.
Two man-up goals kept the Garnet within six goals in the second quarter, but the Garnet couldn't advance any closer. A string of four Ursinus goals in the fourth quarter put the game out of reach.
Swarthmore looks to bounce back on Wednesday night against Muhlenberg College.
