CHESTER, Pa.–The Swarthmore College softball team (7-9) fell twice on Thursday, March 24 to the homestanding Widener Pride (11-3) by scores of 8-0 and 8-2.
Junior
Sara Planthaber had a pair of hits in game one and freshman
Amanda Lopez was 3-for-4 in the nightcap. Freshman shortstop
Marit Vike scored both runs for the Garnet in game two after reaching base on two walks.
Widener held Swarthmore off the board in the first game and used three runs to end the game after six innings. The Garnet took an early 1-0 lead in the backend of the doubleheader as Vike reached on an error and stole second to put herself in scoring position. Another fielding miscue allowed her to score her team-leading 10th run of the season.
Unfortunately for Swarthmore, its lead was short-lived as the Pride deadlocked the game in the bottom of the frame and took the lead for good in the third. The Garnet put a run on the board in the seventh behind
Elizabeth Curcio's RBI single.
The softball team looks to bounce back when it hosts Penn State-Berks for a nonconference doubleheader on Saturday, March 26 at 1 and 3:00 p.m.
