SWARTHMORE, Pa.–The last nonconference doubleheader before Centennial play was not kind to the Swarthmore College softball team (7-11) as the Garnet fell to Penn State-Berks by scores of 4-2 and 10-0.
In game one,
Marit Vike and
Amanda Lopez each had a pair of hits at the top of the order. Swarthmore trailed 3-0 entering the bottom of the sixth, but started a two-run rally to remain within striking distance. Vike and Lopez each singled and stole a base before
Sara Planthaber drove them both in with a double to left field. Unfortunately, Berks scored another run in the next half-inning and retired the Garnet to end the game at 4-2.
Berks put up six runs in the first four innings and added four more in the sixth to end the game early. Lopez knocked two more base hits and made two diving catches in center field to save runs for the Garnet.
The softball team remains at home for their conference-opening doubleheader against the Muhlenberg College Mules on Tuesday, March 29 at 3 and 5:00 p.m.
