Garnet Edge Brandywine, 7-5, In Nonconference Action

SWARTHMORE, Pa.–Freshman starting pitcher Charles Groppe remained undefeated at 4-0 and Aidan Miller picked up his fourth save of the season as the Swarthmore College baseball team (16-4) won for the second consecutive afternoon with a 7-4 victory over Penn State-Brandywine on Thursday, March 24.

Groppe, Miller and Briain Gibbs combined for 13 strikeouts and only one earned run. Miller sat down all three batters he faced in the ninth and needed just 13 pitches to close the game.  Roy Walker and Charles Levitt both collected two hits and Wesley Fishburn drove in a pair of runs for the Garnet. Freshman catcher Justin Pontrella had a hit and crossed the plate twice in his third start of the season.

Swarthmore took advantage of five miscues by the Lions, but also committed four errors of its own.

In the second, Pontrella doubled and later scored courtesy of a pitch in the dirt. Fishburn brought two in with a base hit, but was ruled out after trying to stretch it into a double. The Lions clawed back with two runs in the third frame to shrink its deficit to one.

Swarthmore gained some breathing room with four runs in the fifth as it capitalized on three Brandywine errors. Ryan Burnett reached first and stole second and Nico Aldaco walked before Walker doubled in two runs. Joseph Jackson brought him home and another error with two outs put a run on the board.

The baseball team takes a break from competition before concluding their homestand with a game against Arcadia on Tuesday, March 29 at 3:00 p.m.
