SWARTHMORE, Pa.–Pitchers
McKenzie Ward and
Emily Bowman of the Swarthmore College softball team (7-7) combined for 14 strikeouts, two walks and no earned runs as the Garnet swept Marywood with a 1-0 win in game one and 7-1 result in the nightcap.
Ward got the start in the first game and blanked the Pacers with seven punchouts in the complete-game effort. Swarthmore scored the deciding run in the bottom of the fifth when
Amanda Lopez led off with a base hit and stole two consecutive bases with no outs.
Two batters later,
Elizabeth Curcio used her second single of the day to bring in Lopez and put the game-winner on the board. Ward retired the side in order in both the sixth and seventh innings to give the Garnet their sixth win of the season.
In game two, Swarthmore got ahead early with a run in the bottom of the first as
Sara Planthaber doubled to score Curcio and
Christen Boas Hayes for a 2-0 lead. Bowman, who improved to 3-3 on the year, surrendered an unearned run in the top of the fourth, but allowed only four hits while striking out seven.
In the bottom of the frame, the Garnet widened their margin to 7-2. A passed ball scored Planthaber and an error by Marywood brought home
Hannah Thompson.
Frankie Ponziani also crossed the plate in the inning and Boas Hayes smacked a two-RBI double to bring home Bowman and
Marit Vike.
Vike, Boas Hayes and Ponziani each finished with a pair of hits and seven different players scored for Swarthmore.
The Garnet travel to local rival Widener University for another nonconference doubleheader on Thursday, March 24 at 4 and 6:00 p.m.
