SWARTHMORE, Pa.–Senior
Nate Booth earned his fourth win of the season with six shutout innings as the Swarthmore College baseball team (11-3) started an eight-game homestand by beating Cairn University (5-4) by a 6-3 score.
Freshman
Conor Elliott finished the afternoon with two hits and two RBIs and classmate
Nico Aldaco drove in a pair of runs on two sac flies. Senior
Roy Walker collected two hits and two runs while
Ryan Burnett and
Joseph Jackson also notched a pair of hits.
Booth retired the first nine batters he faced and allowed only three Highlanders to reach base in six frames.
In the bottom of the first, shortstop
Wesley Fishburn led off with a single up the middle and was brought home by Aldaco's sacrifice to right field. Swarthmore added two additional runs in the fourth as
David Wolfson started the inning by reaching on an error. Subsequent base hits by Walker and
Steven Matos-Torres loaded the bases for Jackson, who drove in a run with shallow single. Elliott's sac fly plated Walker and gave the Garnet a 3-0 lead heading into the fifth.
In the fifth, Burnett hit a leadoff triple and crossed the plate on another Aldaco sacrifice. Walker singled on a 1-0 count and was eventually brought in by Elliott's single toward the left side.
The Highlanders got two runs back in the seventh, but Swarthmore took advantage of a mental error by Cairn to score another one in the bottom of the frame. With runners on second and third, Fishburn hit a ball toward short and
Charles Levitt escaped a rundown between second and third as
Aidan Greer crossed the plate for a 6-2 advantage.
Junior
Aidan Miller closed the game with one walk and two strikeouts in the ninth to earn his third save of the campaign. Swarthmore continues the nonconference portion of its schedule with a home game against CCNY on Friday, March 18 at 3:30 p.m.
