MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.–The Swarthmore College baseball team picked up its 10th win of the season on Saturday, March 12 with a 9-2 win over Scranton in the final game of its spring break slate at the Cal Ripken Experience.
Starting pitcher
Charles Groppe had an efficient morning on the bump, tossing seven shutout innings with five strikeouts and one walk on 99 pitches thrown. Groppe improved to 2-0 on the year and has yet to allow a run in 11.2 innings pitched.
The Garnet offense provided plenty of support with 13 hits, including three doubles and a triple.
Wesley Fishburn,
Nico Aldaco and
Steven Matos-Torres each had two hits while Fishburn and
Roy Walker scored twice.
David Wolfson and
Jackson Roberts both plated two runs as well.
Fishburn started the game with a base hit and reached third with two stolen bases. Aldaco singled to right center on a 2-1 count to give Swarthmore a 1-0 lead. In the second,
Conor Elliott hit a leadoff single and found his way to third with two outs. Fishburn singled to drive him in and scored one at-bat later on
Ryan Burnett's triple to left center.
Swarthmore added four more runs in the fifth for a commanding 7-0 lead. Wolfson drove in two RBIs with a single through the left side and Roberts brought in two more with a bases-clearing double on a full count. The Garnet put one more on the board in the seventh when Walker scored on a balk and added another in the ninth as Elliott's sac fly plated
Moses Rubin.
The baseball team kicks off a nine-game homestand on Wednesday, March 16 with a nonconference game against Cairn at 3:30 p.m.
