MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.–The Swarthmore College baseball team improved to 8-2 on Thursday, March 10 with an 8-5 win over Penn College in Myrtle Beach.
Senior outfielder
Roy Walker finished the day with two hits, including a home run, one run and three RBIs. Juniors
Wesley Fishburn,
Ryan Burnett and
Steven Matos-Torres also recorded a pair of hits and
David Wolfson scored twice. Swarthmore nabbed a season-high six stolen bases as Fishburn, Walker and
Conor Elliott took two each.
On the mound,
Noah Linhart earned his first career win and
Aidan Miller picked up his second save of the week with six strikeouts, two hits and no earned runs in three innings of relief.
The Garnet took advantage of eight fielding miscues by the Wildcats, who also left 10 runners on base.
Burnett doubled in the bottom of the first and
Roy Walker's single to left field drove him in. An error by the Penn College shortstop brought home
David Wolfson, who reached first after being hit by a pitch, for a 2-0 Swarthmore lead.
The Wildcats evened the game, but it did not remain deadlocked for long with Swarthmore adding another run in third behind Fishbrun's RBI single. Three more runs came in the third, punctuated by Walker's two-run shot to left field. In the sixth, the Garnet added two more insurance runs with Fishburn scoring on an error and Wolfson's RBI-base hit to bring home Burnett.
Swarthmore plays two of its three upcoming games against Scranton tomorrow, March 11 at 1:00 and 3:30 p.m.
