CHESTERTOWN, Md.–The Swarthmore College women's basketball team (4-17, 3-12 CC) used an impressive defensive effort on Thursday evening to pick up a lopsided, 59-37 road win against Washington College (3-16, 0-13 CC) and complete the season sweep.

Junior Maggie O'Neil registered two blocks to bring her season total to 60, breaking the previous single-season program mark of 59 set by Summer Miller-Walfish '11 in 2008-09. O'Neil has recorded a block in the last 20 games and has 16 multiple-block outings this season. Overall, the Swarthmore defense limited the Shorewomen to a field goal percentage of 24.6, which included a 3-of-17 mark (17.6%) from behind the three-point line.

The Garnet also forced 19 turnovers and translated those takeaways into 19 points on the other end. Swarthmore held a 47-41 margin in rebounding and a commanding 38-16 advantage in points in the paint.

Senior Abbey Deckard recorded a double-double behind 12 points and 12 rebounds to go with three steals and three assists. Sophomore Raina Williams also finished with 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting while senior Jessica Jowdy had a complete stat line of 15 points, eight rebounds, four assists, four steals, and one block.

Washington led 7-2 after two minutes into the first quarter, but trailed for the remainder of the game. The Garnet went on a 12-2 run after a close-range jumper by Hayley Raymond and only allowed three points over the final five minutes of the period. Swarthmore's defensive dominance continued in the second frame as the Shorewomen made their first basket with 5:34 remaining before the half. Williams put up six points in the quarter and gave the visitors a 27-19 advantage heading into intermission.

Swarthmore had its best offensive showing of the evening in the third with 20 points and only two turnovers as it limited to WAC to eight markers on 3-of-15 shooting. Deckard drilled two three-pointers and was perfect from the line for eight points while Bridget Scott chipped in five for the quarter. By the end of the period, the Garnet had amassed a 20-point lead which they would grow to 24 in the fourth.

The women's basketball team looks for another road win on Wednesday, Feb. 10 when it travels to nearby Bryn Mawr College for its final non-conference game of the season. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
