Women's Tennis Slips Against NYU

BOX SCORE

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Swarthmore College women's tennis team (0-1) dropped its season opener to New York University on Saturday, February 27 by a score of 6-3.

The Garnet pushed to keep it close in doubles play, as sophomore Ashley Gao and classmate Rachel Bronkema were edged 8-5 by Vanessa Scott and Laila El Dessouki at the No. 2 position.  At No. 3, senior Abby Schmidt and sophomore Anna Scheibmeir overcame early deficits, but fell 9-7 to Madeline King and Nicole Schnabel.

In singles action, NYU first widened its lead, taking matches at No. 1, 2, and 3.  However the latter half of the Garnet's lineup rebounded to notch the team's three points.  Gao defeated Schnabel at No. 5 in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3, while freshmen Arya Jemal and Rachel Hechinger both clinched their matches in third set tiebreaks at No. 4 and No. 6, respectively.  Jemal beat King, 6-3, 4-6, 11-9, and Hechinger triumphed 6-4, 2-6, 10-7 over Jazmin Colling.

Swarthmore will resume match play over spring break in Puerto Rico next week, taking on Meredith College on March 7th.
