CHESTER, Pa.—Sophomore
Matt Johnson netted the sudden-victory goal for Swarthmore College Men's Lacrosse with 31 seconds remaining in the first overtime period on Saturday to lift the Garnet past the Widener University Pride 8-7.
Johnson scored two goals in the back-and-forth contest. Teammate
Sam Sokota led all scorers with three tallies. Senior
Will Black notched a goal and freshmen
Griffin Johnston and
Dylan Rittenhouse recorded their first collegiate goals.
Cole Fox returned to goal on Saturday and recorded 11 saves in the win. Widener peppered Swarthmore with 47 shots, more than doubling the Garnet's 23 attempts. Twenty-eight of Widener's attempts came in the second half.
Swarthmore (2-0) took an early lead as Sokota scored 1:29 into the game. Widener followed up with a goal three minutes later and the teams exchanged goals throughout the contest. Widener netted two goals within 35 seconds of each other in the second quarter, but Swarthmore responded with a pair of goals to close out the first half ahead 5-4. Sokota reached his hat trick with one minute remaining in the first half.
The goal trading session continued through the third and fourth quarters. Swarthmore held a 7-6 lead with just 25 seconds left, but the Pride had one last kick and scored to even the game and send it into overtime. Swarthmore recovered possession in the final minute of overtime and took a shot with 35 seconds left. Sokota's shot was saved, but Johnson recovered the ground ball and scored the game-winner.
The Garnet continue play on the road on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Drew University.
