SWARTHMORE, Pa.—The three members of the Swarthmore College baseball team's senior class helped spur the Garnet (2-0) to a season-opening sweep of Stockton University (0-2) on Saturday, Feb. 27 with 4-0 and 5-4 victories over the visiting Ospreys.
In game one, starter Nate Booth allowed only one hit and one walk in five innings while third baseman David Wolfson hit a two-run homer, the first of his career, in the bottom of the fifth. Roy Walker finished the afternoon with four hits with the most crucial coming as a walk-off single to center field in the bottom of the ninth in the second game of the doubleheader.
Junior Wesley Fishburn continued the momentum of his breakout sophomore campaign with four hits, three stolen bases and two runs while freshman Nico Aldaco collected two hits and a run in his collegiate debut. Junior Ryan Burnett drew three walks and scored twice for the Garnet.
Booth allowed a hit in the first at-bat of the afternoon before settling in and dominating the rest of the way. Fishburn hit a lead-off single in the bottom of the frame and eventually scored after a wild pitch and an RBI from Burnett. Both teams were held off the scoreboard until the fifth when Walker singled and was driven home by Wolfson's shot to center field on the first pitch of the at-bat.
Stockton had an opportunity in the sixth with the bases loaded and no outs, but sophomore Max Kassan got the Garnet out of a jam behind a double play and a groundout. Kassan picked up the save after retiring every batter he faced in two innings of work.
Swarthmore jumped out to a 2-0 lead in game two after an obstruction and Walker's RBI-single brought in runners though the Ospreys would equalize in the fourth as they capitalized on an error. Wolfson's double in the fourth brought in Jackson Roberts and returned the lead to the Garnet, but Stockton would score the next two, including a potential game-winner in the top of the eighth.
Swarthmore kept themselves alive as Walker singled, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch before Wolfson scored him with a single to center field. Sophomore Jackson Ramey, who picked up the win in game two, ended the top of the ninth with two strikeouts and set the stage for Walker's heroics in the bottom of the frame.
The Garnet travel to Great Meadows, N.J. on Tuesday, March 1 for a nonconference game against Centenary (N.J.) before their Spring Break trip to Myrtle Beach, S.C.
