FLEMINGTON, N.J.—The Swarthmore College baseball team improved to 3-0 on Tuesday, March 1 with a convincing 10-2 win over nonconference opponent Centenary (N.J.) at the Diamond Nation complex.
Junior outfielder
Ryan Burnett finished with two doubles and four RBIs along with two stolen bases. Sophomore designated hitter
Joseph Jackson hit the team's second home run of the season, a two-run shot over the left field wall, and scored once for the visitors.
Jackson Roberts,
Cal Barnett-Mayotte and
Charles Levitt also collected two hits apiece in the game.
Swarthmore pitched by committee with
Griffin Kammerer,
Noah Linhart,
Charles Groppe and
Ricky Conti combining to allow only one earned run over nine innings. Kammerer picked up the win as the pitcher of record.
The team displayed its depth with 20 different players seeing action for the Garnet, including 10 members of the freshman class.
Both sides took advantage of fielding miscues to score in the first inning, but Swarthmore broke the game open with a combined seven runs in the third and fourth frames. To start the third, Levitt singled off the first pitch he saw and moved into scoring position with a stolen base. Burnett brought him home and Jackson's homer two at-bats later made it 4-1 for the Garnet.
The offense continued in the next inning as Swarthmore loaded the bases with no outs. Levitt drove in a run with a single and Burnett cleared the bases on a three-RBI double to left center for an 8-1 advantage.
The Garnet would score twice more in the ninth as they took advantage of an error by the Cyclone shortstop to put
Moses Rubin on base before Conor Elliot's double scored him. Roberts completed the scoring with an RBI-single and Conti closed it out after allowing one hit in the bottom of the frame.
Swarthmore kicks off its spring break slate of games in Myrtle Beach, S.C. with a doubleheader against Manhattanville on Sunday, March 6.
