Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Garnet Force OT With Spectacular Finish, Top Red Devils 72-65

SWARTHMORE, Pa.—It was a perfect miss—just the way they drew it up. Down by three points with 3.9 seconds left in Saturday's game against the Dickinson College Red Devils, Swarthmore College Men's Basketball guard Matt Brennan intentionally missed his third free throw. The rebound went to freshman Zac O'Dell who quickly kicked the pass to Zack Yonda in the left corner for the three pointer. Yonda sank the 3-pointer with 0.9 seconds left, sending the raucous Garnet crowd into a frenzy and the game into overtime.

The Garnet out-scored Dickinson 13-6 in overtime to take the game 72-65. Swarthmore improved to 6-0 and 3-0 in the Centennial Conference. Dickinson dipped to 4-2 (2-1 Centennial).

Swarthmore had trailed by as many as 10 points midway through the second half before getting back on track. The Garnet chipped away and pulled ahead at 53-52 with 3:04 to play with a baseline drive for a layup from Zack Yonda.

However, the Red Devils returned to the lead and held onto a four-point advantage with 30 seconds to play. With 16 seconds left, freshman Nate Shafer broke free for a two-hand dunk to bring Swarthmore within two, but Dickinson drew the foul on the next possession and hit both free throws. Matt Brennan pulled up from three with four seconds left, and drew the foul and three free throws. Brennan hit the first and missed the second. The visitors called time out and the Garnet drew up the game-tying play.

In overtime, the Garnet went ahead by four but were caught with 1:43 to play. Center Robbie Walsh sank four free throws  the rest of the way to help Swarthmore claim the victory. Walsh made his presence known in the overtime period, blocking three shots including an emphatic rejection with 11 seconds left that sealed the game.

Cam Wiley led Swarthmore with 16 points on 7-of-15 shooting. Yonda finished with 15 points, going 5-for-8 and 2-for-3 from 3-point range. Both Wiley and Yonda grabbed seven rebounds. Walsh finished with 11 points, eight rebounds and three blocks.

The Garnet outshot the Red Devils 43.1 percent to 40.3 percent in the contest and overwhelmed them on the glass, grabbing 47 rebounds to Dickinson's 23.

The Garnet look to stay undefeated when they meet up with the 5-1 Ursinus Bears on the road Wednesday night.
