No. 22 Garnet Win Back-And-Forth Battle With Bears, Stay Undefeated

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa.—The top two men's basketball teams in the Centennial Conference battled on Wednesday night; No. 22 Swarthmore College Men's Basketball left as the only remaining undefeated Centennial team after beating the Ursinus College Bears 75-67. The Garnet trailed by a basket or two for most of the first half, but took over down the stretch in a back-and-forth second half.

In the second half, the lead changed hands seven times and the score was tied up 10 times in the period. Swarthmore trailed by four with four-and-a-half minutes to play, but went on a 6-0 burst in a minute. Robbie Walsh dropped in a layup to start the run. On the other end of the court, Cam Wiley intercepted a pass and dashed out for the fastbreak layup to tie the score at 62-62. After forcing another Ursinus turnover, the Garnet came back down the court with a successful possession. Henry Cousineau missed a 3-pointer, but followed his shot for the rebound and finished a floater in the lane.

Ursinus turned around with five straight points, drawing a Swarthmore timeout. With 1:51 left, Wiley burned his defender with a quick first step that allowed him to get to the hoop for a layup, pulling Swarthmore within one.

With 1:09 to play, Matt Brennan took a charge near the Ursinus bench to return possession to Swarthmore. Zack Yonda drained a three from the top left of the arc with 50 seconds left giving Swarthmore the lead for good at 69-67.

Wiley, getting his first collegiate start, led all scorers with 21 points on 7-of-17 shooting. Three other Garnet players reached double figures: Matt Brennan (15), Henry Cousineau (12) and Zack Yonda (11). Ursinus' Matt Knowles led the Bears with 20 points.

The Garnet again won the rebounding battle, but the results were closer than any game so far this year. Swarthmore grabbed 45 boards to Ursinus' 39. Freshman Zac O'Dell also made his first start and pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds and blocked three shots.

Swarthmore committed 10 first-half turnovers, but cleaned up their passing in the second half and only committed five turnovers in the period.

Both teams entered the double bonus early in the second half and spent a fair amount of time at the free-throw line. Swarthmore went 20-for-28 (71.4 percent) from the line and Ursinus shot 16-for-26 (61.5 percent).

Swarthmore improved to 7-0 (4-0 Centennial) while Ursinus dipped to 5-2 (3-1 Centennial).

Swarthmore's next contest is against Rowan University in the first game of the Garnet Holiday Tournament on Dec. 17.
