Garnet Hold Off Cougars To Cap Off Holiday Tourney

SWARTHMORE, Pa.—No. 15 Swarthmore College Men's Basketball wrapped up the Garnet Holiday Tournament with a 61-60 win over the Averett University Cougars on Sunday afternoon. The Garnet (8-1) finished third in the tournament with the win.

Senior forward Chris Bourne represented Swarthmore on the all-tournament team. Bourne scored 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting on Sunday and added 11 points on Saturday. Joining Bourne on the all-tournament team were Rowan twins Rob and Nick DiPersia, Roanoke's John Caldwell and Averett's Charles Bryant.

Cam Wiley also scored 16 for the Garnet, right around his team-leading average of 16.4 points per game. Zack Yonda, averaging 12.1 points per game, scored 12 on Sunday and went 3-for-6 from the 3-point line. Yonda scored all 12 of his points in the second half. His timely 3-point shooting tied the score at 41-41 with 12:36 to play, gave Swarthmore a one-point lead with 7:31 to go, and gave the Garnet their first two-basket lead of the period with 4:05 to play.

The Garnet, statistically the top rebounding team in the country was out-rebounded for the first time this season, 37-32. However, the Garnet did have their best game of the season handling the ball, committing a season-low 10 turnovers.

Swarthmore recorded six blocks with Robbie Walsh leading the way with three. Swarthmore has registered at least five blocks seven times this season.

The Garnet trailed by four entering the second half and by as many as eight with 14:29 to go in the game. A 3-pointer by Matt Brennan sparked an 8-0 run to pull the Garnet even at 41-41. A short run by the Cougars gave them a seven-point lead with 10 minutes to go, but the tables turned with a 9-0 run by Bourne and Yonda.

The Garnet led by two with 54 seconds to play, but came up with an important defensive stop to hold off the Cougars. The Cougars scored a layup with 1.9 seconds to go to make it a one-point game but couldn't prevent the Garnet from running out the clock.

Swarthmore resumes play on Dec. 30 at Hood College.
