Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

No. 21 Garnet Take Blazers To OT, Pull Away With Sharp Shooting

FREDERICK, Md.—Playing from behind after a low-scoring first half, No. 21 Swarthmore College Men's Basketball had to make up a double-digit deficit in the second half at Hood College on Friday night. The Garnet trailed by nine with four minutes to play in regulation, but evened the score in the final minute to force overtime. Swarthmore (9-1) pulled away in OT, beating Hood (10-2) 72-63.

The Garnet were sharp from 3-point range in crunch time, sinking 6-of-7 triples in the final four minutes of regulation and the entirety of overtime. The only missed 3-pointer was a long-distance heave right before the regulation buzzer. Zack Yonda knocked down three 3-pointers in overtime and finished with a team-high 16 points. Yonda went 5-for-7 from beyond the 3-point line. Matt Brennan shot 4-for-8 from 3-point range and finished with 14 points. Cam Wiley hit three triples to end with 13 points, and Sam Lebryk chipped in two 3-pointers to finish with 10 points.

Lebryk's 3-pointer with 50 seconds to play evened the score at 56-56 to force overtime.

Swarthmore struggled in the first half, getting out-rebounded, committing 11 turnovers, shooting 28 percent from the floor and only getting one made free throw to Hood's eight. The Garnet field goal shooting improved to 41.2 percent in the second half, and Swarthmore gained a seven-rebound advantage on the boards. A disparity continued to exist in free-throw attempts as Swarthmore went 2-for-3 from the line while Hood went 10-for-10 in the second period.

The Garnet trailed by 10 points early in the second half, but caught up with a 13-3 run capped off with a putback layup by Zac O'Dell with 14:43 to go. The Garnet went on to take a five-point lead, but found themselves down by nine after going nearly seven minutes without a field goal.

Brennan drained a spot up 3-pointer with 3:39 to play to spark a Garnet comeback. On the Garnet's next trip down the court, Cam Wiley knocked down another trey from the top of the arc. With just under two minutes to play, Swarthmore's defense forced Hood to the end of the shot clock and freshman Nate Shafer, double-teaming the ball near half court, ripped away the ball and sprinted ahead for the fastbreak slam dunk. Shafer added a layup on an under-the-basket inbounds pass, pulling Swarthmore within one again with 1:16.

Hood responded with a pair of free throws to climb back to a three-point lead, but Lebryk drained a 3-pointer from the corner to even the count and force overtime.

In overtime, Swarthmore pulled away quickly with Yonda's three 3-pointers. Swarthmore went 7-for-8 from the free-throw line in the period to lock up the win.

At the conclusion of the contest, Swarthmore held a 43-39 advantage in rebounding. The Garnet posted a season high in blocks with 10. Robbie Walsh recorded five blocks.

Swarthmore resumes play in 2017, with a 6 p.m. game at The Catholic University of America on Jan. 3.
