SWARTHMORE, Pa.–It took just under a hour for the Swarthmore College volleyball team (24-5) to pick up a sweep of the visiting Rutgers-Newark Scarlet Raiders (15-14) in the first round of the ECAC Tournament on Wednesday, Nov. 9.
The Garnet prevailed by a 25-16, 25-9, 25-6 score as they limited their opponents to a -.083 hitting percentage.
Sophomore
Guin Mesh recorded seven of the team's 12 service aces, including two in a row to end the first set.
Sarah Wallace had a full line with 13 kills, seven digs and three block assists while
Mehra den Braven just missed a double-double behind nine each of kills and digs.
Malia Scott and
Elise Cummings shared setting duties with 18 and 15 assists, respectively.
Swarthmore set the tone early by taking the first six points of the opening frame and led the match wire-to-wire. A four-point run by the Scarlet Raiders was the biggest challenge to the Garnet's lead in the first, but timely kills and strong defense negated the threat.
A nine-point streak in the second on
Amanda Reed's serve broke the set wide open and gave host Swarthmore firm control. Kills by den Braven and
Emma Morgan-Bennett closed it out and put the Garnet ahead 2-0.
The hosts saved their best for last, riding an impressive .480 hitting percentage on 13 kills and one error to an easy 25-6 result in the third set. Wallace buried five kills in the frame Swarthmore captured the final five points to advance in the ECAC tournament.
In the quarterfinals, the Garnet will take on Moravian, who swept Neumann earlier in the evening, at Lebanon Valley College on Saturday, Nov. 12 at a time to be determined. Swarthmore beat the Greyhounds, 3-0, earlier this season.
