SWARTHMORE, Pa.—The 2016-17 Centennial Conference schedule began with a home win for Swarthmore College Men's Basketball. The Garnet defeated the Washington College (Md.) Shoremen 74-61 on Tuesday evening.
Zack Yonda led the Garnet with 12 points and also corralled nine rebounds, just missing the double-double. Chris Bourne and Cam Wiley both punched in 11 points. Wiley had a game-high seven made free throws (7-for-9).
The Garnet made their presence known when rebounds were up for grabs, out-rebounding the visitors 48-27. The Garnet hold a +20.7 rebounds per game advantage over their opponents through three games this season. Freshman Nate Shafer, who entered the game as a reserve, led the team with 12 rebounds.
Swarthmore only went 6-for-21 from 3-point range, but got it done in the paint scoring nearly half of the team's points from the lane (36 points).
Two 3-pointers by Washington's Joey Shelton in the first two minutes put Swarthmore in a 6-0 hole to start, but the Garnet quickly gained control of the game with a 10-0 run.
With 3:14 left in the first, Yonda buried a triple to give Swarthmore its first double-digit lead of the game (34-23). The Garnet lead stood at 12 at halftime. It reached 17 with 9:02 remaining in the second half after Wiley drove to the basket for a layup that made the count 61-44.
The Shoremen tried to hang around and pulled within eight (65-57) with 4:26 to go. A quick 6-0 run with a pair of free throws from Wiley, a jump shot from Yonda and a layup by Zac O'Dell helped put the game out of reach.
Swarthmore (3-0) returns to the court on Sunday at Misericordia University for a 4:30 p.m. game.
