SWARTHMORE, Pa.–The Swarthmore College women's basketball team (1-3) rode a 13-0 lead in the first quarter to a 77-70 triumph over the visiting Washington College Shorewomen on Tuesday, Nov. 22.
The Garnet used a balancing scoring attack to claim their Centennial Conference opener with four players finishing in double figures.
Lindsay O'Sullivan led the way with 16 points while
Maggie O'Neil and
Melanie Ackerman each finished with 14.
Kayla Sembly poured in 10 points on 5-of-11 shooting and
Hayley Raymond chipped in eight.
Elizabeth Stiles handed out five assists off the bench and
Raina Williams patrolled the pain with two blocks.
O'Neil started the game off with a trey and jumpers by Raymond and Sembly pushed it to a 7-0 advantage. Six more unanswered points gave Swarthmore its largest lead of the night, but the Shorewomen were not ready to concede early. The visitors trimmed their deficit to four at the end of the quarter and eventually took the lead in the second frame before threes from Ackerman restored Swarthmore's advantage.
The Garnet were ahead, 33-32, heading into the break and outscored Washington by a 25-20 margin in the third. A big chunk of those points came from the charity stripe as the hosts finished a perfect 12-for-12 from the line in the period.
In the fourth, O'Sullivan scored six points and clutch free throw shooting by O'Neil down the stretch helped hold off a late charge by the Shorewomen.
Swarthmore will take a week off before returning to conference play with a road tilt at Muhlenberg on Tuesday, Nov. 29 at 7:30 p.m.
