Women’s Hoops Battles Mules, But Falls On Road

ALLENTOWN, Pa.–Facing the defending Centennial Conference champion Muhlenberg Mules on the road, the Swarthmore College women's basketball team fell, 74-64, on Tuesday, Nov. 29.

The Garnet shot 41 percent from beyond the arc and held the Mules to 31 percent overall from the field, but could not overcome 31 turnovers, which translated to 28 points for the hosts.

Forward Lindsay O'Sullivan made a living at the free throw line with 7-of-8 converted en route to a team-high 19 points. Melanie Ackerman drained four three-pointers off the bench as Elizabeth Stiles dished out seven dimes in 26 minutes. Starters Maggie O'Neil and Hayley Raymond each chipped in eight points and Raina Williams blocked three shots.

Swarthmore trailed 12-24 after the first quarter, but outscored Muhlenberg by a 22-19 margin in the second frame. Ackerman scored nine points in the quarter, including a three at the end of the half to cut Swarthmore's deficit to single digits at 34-43.

The Mules regained control with 21 points in the third as they limited the Garnet to nine. Swarthmore, however, used an 11-point run at the start of the fourth to remain in the game. O'Sullivan and O'Neil combined for 11 points in the final period and the Garnet defense limited the hosts to 20 percent shooting, but Swarthmore was unable to get closer than 10 and picked up its first conference loss of the year.

The women's basketball team remains on the road for a conference showdown at Johns Hopkins on Thursday, Dec. 1 at 7 p.m.
