Volleyball Dispatches Green Terror in Straight Sets

SWARTHMORE, Pa.—Junior outside hitter Sarah Wallace recorded her third consecutive double-double with 11 kills and 10 digs as the Swarthmore College volleyball team (13-2, 5-1 CC) gained sole control of second place in the Centennial Conference with a 3-0 sweep of McDaniel.

Freshman Mehra den Braven was close with nine kills and 18 digs and sophomore libero Sarah Girard recorded a match-high 19 digs to go with three service aces. Malia Scott filled the box score with three kills, eight digs and 21 assists and Olivia Leventhal hit .269 on nine kills and two errors in 26 attempts.

The stingy Garnet defense limited the Green Terror to a .102 hitting percentage, including a .087 mark in the second set.

At 8-8 in the first, Swarthmore claimed four consecutive points, including two service aces by Girard, to take the lead for the good. Leventhal swung five kills in the frame with no errors and Wallace chipped in four in eight attempts.

The Garnet claimed nine of the first 10 points in the second set and led by as many as 11 points at 21-10. McDaniel responded with a six-point run of its own before a Garnet timeout helped the team recollect. Swarthmore came out of the break and closed out the set after a den Braven kill.

Swarthmore hit a blistering .371 in the third frame with 16 kills, including six by den Braven, and three errors in 35 attempts. The turning point came on Alice Liu's serve as Swarthmore rattled off an eight-point streak to effectively put the Green Terror away. Wallace eventually ended the match with a kill from Elise Cummings, who recorded 13 assists on the afternoon.

The volleyball team travels to Gettysburg on Tuesday, Oct. 11 for a conference match at 7 p.m.
