GETTYSBURG, Pa.–The Swarthmore College volleyball team (14-2, 6-1 CC) vanquished yet another Centennial Conference opponent on Tuesday, Oct. 11 with a 3-1 victory over the homestanding Gettysburg College Bullets (12-6, 2-2 CC).
The Garnet picked up their third consecutive win by dispatching the Bullets 25-20, 25-15, 18-25, 25-21. Setter
Malia Scott handed out a career-high 31 assists and
Elise Cummings chipped in 17. Outside hitters
Sarah Wallace and
Mehra den Braven each recorded 16 digs and completed double-doubles with 10 and 14 kills, respectively.
Sarah Girard anchored a defense that limited Gettysburg to a .115 hitting percentage and
Alice Liu factored into four of the team's seven blocks.
The Garnet hit .324 in the first frame and jumped out to an 11-2 advantage, eventually leading by as many as 11 points at 15-6. Den Braven swung five kills in the frame as Girard recorded seven of her team-high 18 digs. Gettysburg managed to save one set point before Scott put the Garnet ahead 1-0 with a kill from Girard.
In the second, the Bullets evened the set at 12 apiece before Swarthmore won eight of the next nine points to put it out of reach.
Olivia Leventhal buried two consecutive kills and
Amanda Reed served during a three-point run that forced a Gettysburg timeout. Overall, the Bullets were limited to a -.086 mark on six kills and nine errors in 35 attempts.
The hosts rebounded in the third set, which featured nine ties and only one lead change. The Bullets' Laura Bergin posted seven kills and no errors in 12 attempts as they took advantage of four consecutive points at 14-14 to break the set open.
Gettysburg threatened to push the match to five sets with an 18-16 margin in the fourth after a four-point streak, but a Swarthmore timeout helped right the ship. The Garnet regained the lead with kills from Wallace and
Emma Morgan-Bennett and held off the pesky Bullets, eventually claiming the final four points to clinch the match.
Swarthmore will travel to Boston for the MIT Quad Tournament on this Friday and Saturday, Oct. 14-15, opening competition against the College of Mount St. Vincent.
