Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Gettysburg Hands Field Hockey Narrow Loss

SWARTHMORE, Pa.—Two second-half goals were not enough to carry the Swarthmore College field hockey team (4-9, 0-6 CC) to victory in a close, 3-2 loss to the visiting Gettysburg Bullets (4-5, 2-3 CC) on Saturday, Oct. 8.

Jordyn Bell and Kathleen Carmichael each found the back of the net for the Garnet, which was looking for its first conference win of the 2016 season. Sophomore goalkeeper Zelda Bank recorded 10 stops as Ursula Monaghan and Jane Blicher each added defensive saves as well.

Gettysburg tallied in the 19th minute of the first half and maintained a 1-0 lead until early in the second when Bell buried her fifth goal of the season. She received a strong cross from senior classmate Katherine Ianni and tapped it in at the right post to even the contest.

The Bullets regained their lead four minutes later on a play from a penalty corner and forced a Swarthmore timeout at the 50-minute mark. Freshman Sophie Peipher generated a shot on goal shortly after, but was turned away by the Gettysburg keeper. The visitors continued to challenge Bank, who rose to the occasion before conceding an insurance goal at 64:04.

Hope remained for the Garnet as Carmichael converted a pass from Peipher into a midrange goal just a minute later, but it was too little too late for Swarthmore.

The team travels down to Virginia to face Ferrum on Tuesday, Oct. 11 at 3:30 p.m.
