Field Hockey Falls to Ferrum in Double Overtime

FERRUM, Va.–On Tuesday, Oct. 11, the Swarthmore College field hockey team (4-10) dropped a 2-1 contest in double overtime to the Ferrum College Panthers (2-9) in its final nonconference game of the 2016 season.

The Garnet scored in the eighth minute as sophomore Riya Garg tallied her first goal of the season. The Panthers answered late in the second half and netted the game-winner just 22 seconds into the second period of overtime.

Swarthmore held a 15-9 advantage in shots on goal and doubled up Ferrum with 22 penalty corners to the host's 11. Senior Katherine Ianni registered four shots toward net and Sophie Peipher added three. On the defensive end, sophomore Zelda Bank made seven saves between the pipes.

With time winding down in the first overtime, the Garnet earned a penalty corner and nearly found their golden goal, but hit the post and put another shot wide of the net.

The team looks to snap its eight-game losing streak when it travels to McDaniel on Saturday, Oct. 15 for a 12 p.m. start.
