CHESTERTOWN, Md.—The Swarthmore College volleyball team (12-2, 4-1 CC) erased an eight-point deficit in the third set en route to a 3-0 victory against the Washington College Shorewomen (6-8, 1-4 CC) on Tuesday, Oct. 4.

Sarah Wallace registered a double-double on a match-high 15 kills and 11 digs as classmate
Malia Scott collected one of her own behind 16 assists and 10 digs. The Garnet put up eight blocks with freshmen

Emma Morgan-Bennett each recording four and
Olivia Leventhal adding three.
Elise Cummings served four of the team's seven aces and handed out 17 assists as the Garnet hit .210 on 43 kills and 18 errors in 119 attempts.
The first set featured eight ties and three lead changes as each team alternated its runs. Late in the frame, the Shorewomen led 18-15, but three consecutive Swarthmore points evened the score. Washington won the next point before the Garnet unleashed a seven-point run, which included two aces by Cummings and a pair of blocks, to close out the set.
Wallace swung seven kills with no errors in 11 attempts for an impressive .636 hitting percentage in the second. The turning point in the set came at 7-7 when Swarthmore won four consecutive points to create a gap between the homestanding Shorewomen. The hosts were able to get within two and managed to save two game points, but could not overcome the stalwart Garnet.
Swarthmore fell behind 11-3 in the third frame and answered by slowly chipping away at the deficit. Washington led 17-13 and appeared poised to extend the match until the Garnet responded with five consecutive points, capped off by a Wallace ace, to regain control. Although Washington retook the lead at 21-20, the visitors could not be denied and left Chestertown with its fourth conference win of the year.
The volleyball team kicks off fall break with a home match against McDaniel on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 1 p.m.
