SWARTHMORE, Pa.—Swarthmore College Women's Soccer, back on the pitch for its first game in 10 days, clipped the visiting Haverford College Fords on Saturday evening 2-1.
Swarthmore (14-2, 7-2 Centennial) heads into the Centennial Conference postseason as the No. 3 seed, set to play against Johns Hopkins University on the campus of McDaniel College next Saturday.
An early penalty kick goal established a lead for Swarthmore in the first half. Sophomore forward
Marin McCoy was taken down in the box in the 19th minute and then proceeded to bury her own penalty kick.
The Fords (10-4-3, 4-3-2 Centennial) only got two shots off in the first half and none on goal against Swarthmore's stingy defense. Haverford, however, tallied a goal in the 57th minute after a long free kick by Katie Safter wandered untouched through the box and into the back of the net.
Swarthmore responded in the 71st minute to regain the lead. Quick passing on a break by McCoy and
Katie Dougherty set up the game-winning tally for junior
Sarah Hancock. The Garnet kept the Fords away from goal the remainder of the contest and
Amy Shmoys picked up the win in goal.
Swarthmore honored seniors
Justine Albers,
Mele Johnson,
Caroline Khanna,
Katherine Zavez and
Miranda Saldivar prior to the game.
