SWARTHMORE, Pa.–The homestanding Swarthmore College volleyball team (21-3) took care of business on the final day of the Garnet Classic with 3-0 wins over Stockton University and Colby College to conclude the tournament with dropping a single set.
Freshman outside hitter
Mehra den Braven was named the Tournament MVP and was joined on the All-Tournament Team by junior setter
Malia Scott.
Swarthmore reached the 20-win mark for the third consecutive season after beating regionally-ranked Stockton 25-19, 25-19, 25-22 to start the day.
Sarah Girard and
Elise Cummings shared the team lead with 12 digs as Cummings also handed out 24 assists for a double-double.
Sarah Wallace recorded one of her own behind 11 kills and 10 digs as Scott and
Guin Mesh each served four aces in the match. Den Braven swung a team-high 13 kills and
Alice Liu and
Olivia Leventhal both buried eight.
Both teams hit accurately in the first set, but Swarthmore prevailed with a .383 attack percentage on 21 kills and three errors in 47 attempts. Neither team was able to establish firm control of the set until Swarthmore took a 22-16 lead on
Malia Scott's serve and eventually closed out the frame with a pair of kills by
Bridget Scott and one from den Braven.
The Ospreys took an early lead in set number two, but the resolute Garnet clawed their way back and took the lead for good on consecutive aces by
Malia Scott. Later in the set, Mesh tallied two aces in a row to keep Stockton at bay. Swarthmore never trailed in the final frame and completed the sweep on a big block by den Braven and Liu.
The Garnet rolled past the Colby Mules with a .356 hitting percentage as the visitors were limited to a -.043 clip. Den Braven tallied 12 kills to only one error and Leventhal added eight as well. The team displayed its depth as 16 players saw action in the match.
In the second frame, the Mules showed fight and threaten to even things up by saving three set points and tying the game at 26-26, but could not overcome a service error and yet another den Braven kill. Swarthmore concluded the match quickly in the third and captured the final six points with Cummings serving.
The volleyball team travels to Tri-Co neighbor Bryn Mawr on Tuesday, Oct. 25 for a match a 7 p.m.
