Volleyball Opens Garnet Classic With Pair of Wins

SWARTHMORE, Pa.–Hosting the 2016 Garnet Classic at Tarble Pavilion, the Swarthmore College volleyball team (19-3) made quick work of the Scranton Royals and DeSales Bulldogs en route to two 3-0 wins on Friday, Oct. 21.

Freshman middle blocker Emma Morgan-Bennett buried eight kills and three blocks in each match and committed only one attack error on the evening.

Against the Royals, Sarah Wallace had a full stat line with 11 digs, nine kills and four service aces as Sarah Girard led the team with 14 digs. Malia Scott and Elise Cummings shared setting duties with 21 and 11 assists, respectively, and freshman Mehra den Braven swung a team-high 10 kills.

The Garnet broke the first frame open with seven-point run and withstood a late Scranton rally as the Royals saved four set points to extend the contest temporarily.

Swarthmore's attack blew through the Scranton defense in the second set, prevailing by a 25-11 score with a .273 hitting percentage as the Royals were limited to a -.059 mark. Classmates den Braven and Morgan-Bennett combined for seven kills and no errors and Cummings finished off the set with a pair of service aces.

The back-and-forth third frame featured a whopping 16 ties and nine lead changes as the Garnet took advantage of five aces to complete the sweep.

The hosts capped the evening with a 25-20, 25-22, 25-16 victory over DeSales while limiting the Bulldogs to a paltry .078 attack percentage, including a .000 clip in the first set. Girard led all players with 25 digs, including several diving saves, and den Braven notched a double-double behind 12 kills and 11 digs. Wallace just missed out with 12 digs and nine kills and Guin Mesh tallied three of the team's seven aces.

DeSales hung with Swarthmore in the first and second sets, but did not have the stamina to go the distance with the Garnet. In the third frame, the hosts .250 and limited the Bulldogs to a .094 mark in a 25-16 triumph. DeSales managed to trim its deficit to two points at 16-18 before Swarthmore unleashed a seven-point streak on Alice Liu's serve to put the match away for good.

Action at the Garnet Classic continues on Saturday with matches against Stockton and Colby at 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., respectively.
