SWARTHMORE, Pa.—With a 2-1 win on Wednesday evening, Swarthmore College Women's Soccer earned a spot in the Centennial Conference postseason for the third year in a row.
Swarthmore (13-2, 6-2 Centennial) recorded 29 shots to Muhlenberg's seven in the win. Hannah Lichtenstein and Marin McCoy scored Swarthmore's goals in the second half. After a scoreless first half, Swarthmore came out firing in the second half. The Garnet took three quick shots in the first two minutes of the first half, including a shot by Caroline Coats that pinged off the crossbar.
In the 50th minute, the Garnet ran a counter-attack up the right wing. Muhlenberg's goalkeeper drew out to the edge of the box to defend Katie Dougherty. Dougherty tapped the ball around the keeper and crossed the ball back into the middle, finding Lichtenstein for her sixth goal of the season.
Muhlenberg stunned Swarthmore with a long-range shot at the start of the 56th minute that sailed into the goal, Muhlenberg's first shot on goal in the game.
Undeterred, Swarthmore continued to pressure Muhlenberg and had a shot on the post and four shots on goal before scoring in the 74th minute. Lichtenstein crossed a pass from the right wing that went right to the head of Marin McCoy in front of the goal. McCoy snapped in her team-leading ninth goal.
Swarthmore is scheduled to play at Bryn Mawr in a non-conference game on Saturday at 1 p.m.
