CAMBRIDGE, Mass.–A furious second-set comeback and balanced attack helped propel the Swarthmore College volleyball team (15-2) to a 3-0 win over the College of Mount Saint Vincent (9-11) on the first day of the MIT Quad Tournament.
The Garnet prevailed 25-10, 27-25, 25-14 on Friday evening for their fourth consecutive win.
Olivia Leventhal led the way with eight kills and
Sarah Wallace and
Emma Morgan-Bennett each added six as Swarthmore hit .302 while limiting the Dolphins to a .072 mark.
Guin Mesh contributed five service aces as Wallace and
Amanda Reed shared the team-high for digs with 11.
Malia Scott and
Elise Cummings paced the offense with 18 and 14 assists, respectively.
Swarthmore made quick work of its opponents in the first set, spurred by an early six point run that featured three consecutive aces by Mesh. An eight-point streak later in the frame shut the door on the Dolphins and gave the Garnet an early overall lead.
Mount Saint Vincent showed more life in the second set and threatened to tie the match at one apiece with a 20-12 advantage. The Garnet took advantage of aces by
Malia Scott to close the gap, but needed a timeout at 23-19 to recollect. Coming out of the break, Swarthmore claimed five straight points to take the lead and a chance at match point. The Dolphins were able to save two of those before kills by Wallace and
Bridget Scott capped the set.
Accurate hitting helped the Garnet to a Sweep as they swung 13 kills and no errors in 26 attempts. Eleven different players saw time for Swarthmore, which jumped out to a 9-1 lead and won the final five points of the match, including another Mesh ace.
Tomorrow, the team continues action at the Quad Tournament with a match against SUNY-Oneonta at 10:30 before facing the hosts at 1 p.m.
