CAMBRIDGE, Mass.–The Swarthmore College volleyball team (16-3) finished second at the MIT Quad tournament on Saturday, Oct. 15 after beating SUNY Oneonta and falling to host MIT to conclude tournament play.
Sophomore
Sarah Girard and junior
Sarah Wallace landed on the all-tournament team and MIT's Megan Gebhard was named the most valuable player.
Swarthmore began the day with a 3-1 win (25-12, 23-25, 25-17, 25-22) over the SUNY-Oneonta Red Dragons.
Malia Scott led the team in assists and digs with 28 and 22, respectively and
Mehra den Braven (10 kills, 10 digs) and Wallace (10 kills, 19 digs) each completed a double-double.
Olivia Leventhal also swung 10 kills as
Alice Liu finished with nine in that category and two block assists.
The Garnet rolled to a 1-0 lead after the first set with a .522 hitting percentage on 13 kills and only one error in 23 attempts. On the other end, the Dragons were limited to a .056 mark with 10 kills to eight errors.
The back-and-forth second frame featured nine ties and three lead changes. The Garnet managed to stay with their opponents at 23-23, but conceded two points as the match became tied up.
Swarthmore recovered and never trailed during the third set, taking eight of the first nine points.
Emma Morgan-Bennett buried four of her eight kills in the frame and Girard had a service ace. In the fourth, neither team was able to establish a clear advantage before Swarthmore won two points at 21-21 and forced a timeout. Girard earned a match point opportunity with another ace and Liu finished it off with a kill two points later.
In the second match, Swarthmore took the first set against the Engineers, who received votes in the most recent AVCA coaches' poll. The score was tied 18-18 before a Swarthmore timeout sparked a five-point Garnet run and put the visitors on the brink of a 1-0 lead.
Swarthmore ran out to a 9-2 lead in the second with a pair of aces by Wallace, but could not keep MIT at the bay. The Garnet saved a set point at 24-22 to come within one point until the hosts evened the set score heading into the third.
The Engineers eked out a tight battle and claimed the fourth behind a .351 team hitting percentage. For the Garnet, Wallace recorded 15 kills, 14 digs, and five aces as Morgan-Bennett put down six block assists.
The volleyball team resumes conference play on Wednesday, Oct. 19 when it hosts Muhlenberg College at 7 p.m.
