SWARTHMORE, Pa.—The visiting Drew University Rangers snatched the win from Swarthmore College Men's Soccer in Wednesday night's non-conference game, scoring the game-winner with 42 seconds left.
Swarthmore slipped to 6-7 with the 1-0 loss, and Drew improved to 8-2-2.
Wednesday's game was a physical battle featuring 27 fouls and five yellow cards. Only one corner kick was taken by each team, but both teams registered double-digit shots. Drew took 15 shots to Swarthmore's 10 and held a 6-3 advantage on shots on goal.
The Rangers got after the Garnet early with seven shots in the first 20 minutes, but the Garnet soon slowed down the Rangers' attack and countered with chances of their own.
Omni Gal and Tommy Sheehan took shots on goal in the 27th and 29th minutes. Billy Evers snapped a curling long-range shot from the left side in the 40th minute, but was denied by Drew's John Marques.
Michael Thut, who took the loss in goal, recorded his seventh game this year with five or more saves.
With another overtime contest for the Garnet appearing likely, Drew worked the ball up the right side in the final minute. A pass went into the top of the box and then was returned to the right wing for a quick chip pass back into the box. Drew's Dylan Hammer tapped in the header inside the right post for the score.
Swarthmore returns to Centennial Conference play on Saturday with a 7 p.m. home game against McDaniel College.
