SWARTHMORE, Pa.—Swarthmore College Men's Soccer overcame a first-half deficit with a pair of goals early in the second period to earn a Centennial Conference win against the visiting McDaniel College Green Terror.
The Garnet improved to 7-7 overall and 3-3 in Centennial play with the 2-1 win. If the playoffs were to begin today, the Garnet would be the fifth and final seed.
Swarthmore snapped a three-game scoreless streak with a goal by freshman
Joey Bradley in the 52nd minute that equalized the game at 1-1.
Michael Nafziger scored the game-winner 87 seconds later, his team-leading fifth goal of the season.
McDaniel had scored in the 44th minute, smashing a shot off the bottom of the crossbar and then finishing the play after the Garnet failed to clear the ball out of the box.
The Garnet responded quickly in the second half. Nafziger snapped off a shot that was saved but bounced off the goalkeeper and back into play. Bradley, near the left post, corralled the rebound and punched in the goal. Less than a minute-and-a-half later, the Garnet regained possession and drew a foul in the midfield.
Tommy Sheehan took the free kick and sent it into the box. Nafziger connected with the pass and flicked back a header into the goal.
The Garnet defense locked down and only allowed one more Green Terror shot on goal the rest of the way.
Swarthmore plays a non-conference contest on Wednesday at Rutgers-Camden at 7 p.m. Conference play resumes next Saturday at Dickinson College.
