HAVERFORD, Pa.–Senior guard
Jessica Jowdy scored over 20 points for the fourth consecutive game, but it was not enough as the Swarthmore College women's basketball team (3-15, 2-10 CC) dropped a 50-58 contest to rival Haverford on Wednesday, Jan. 27.
Jowdy poured in 27 points with four three-pointers to go with seven rebounds and five steals.
Maggie O'Neil also scored in double figures with 11 points and added five rebounds and three blocks in 27 minutes of action. Swarthmore grabbed 17 offensive rebounds for 10 second-chance points and held a 12-3 margin in points off turnovers.
After the Garnet fell behind 6-0 in the first quarter, Jowdy three consecutive treys to give her team a 9-8 lead. Swarthmore kept the Haverford off the scoreboard for the final 3:02 of the quarter and a three-ball by O'Neil provided a 12-8 margin entering the second.
The Fords would eventually regain their lead and were ahead by six in the final 1:16 of the half before Jowdy scored five straight points for a one-point ball game (23-24) at the intermission.
Both teams shot well from the line in the third as Swarthmore went 6-of-8 with Jowdy,
Jordyn Bell,
Hayley Raymond, and
Bridget Scott converting from the charity stripe. Haverford finished 7-of-9 and pushed its lead to 43-36 before the fourth quarter. In the final period, O'Neil drained a three with 8:01 remaining to make it a one-possession game, but Swarthmore could not close the gap down the stretch despite its defensive pressure as Haverford sank 11 free throws to put the game of reach.
The women's basketball team returns to Table Pavilion for a Centennial Conference game against Johns Hopkins on Saturday, Jan. 30 at 1:00 p.m.
