Women’s Hoops Suffers Close Loss to Johns Hopkins

SWARTHMORE, Pa.–A late charge by the Swarthmore College women's basketball team (3-16, 2-11 CC) came up short as the Garnet fell by a 64-72 score to visiting Johns Hopkins (8-9, 6-5 CC) on Saturday, Jan. 30.

Senior Jessica Jowdy had a near triple-double with 24 points, 11 rebounds, and eight assists while Maggie O'Neil filled the box score with eight points, eight rebounds, two blocks, and two steals. Sophomore Bridget Scott grabbed six offensive rebounds and classmate Hayley Raymond scored 10 points, her second-highest total of the season.

Swarthmore ran ahead to an 8-2 lead early in the first quarter behind four from Raymond and forced a Hopkins timeout with 6:55 left. The visitors answered with six consecutive points before Jowdy poured in six of her own to give the Garnet a 14-10 advantage at the end of the period. The Blue Jays outscored the Garnet 21-10 in the second to take a 31-24 lead into the intermission.

O'Neil drained two three-pointers in the third and Swarthmore finished the quarter with a perfect 6-of-6 mark from the charity stripe, including two apiece from Jowdy, Bridget Scott, and Kemi Oladipo. A layup from JHU's Rachel Cook in the final minute of the period made it 49-42 in favor of the visitors entering the final frame.

Hopkins pushed its lead to 18 with a little over two minutes remaining before a 14-2 run by the Garnet brought the game within six points at 68-62 down the stretch. Unfortunately, the Jays converted on their trips to the line and left Tarble Pavilion with a 72-64 win.

Swarthmore remains at home for another Centennial Conference matchup against Ursinus on Tuesday, Feb. 2. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
