Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Jowdy Has Career Day But Garnet Can’t Overcome Terror

SWARTHMORE, Pa.–Senior guard Jessica Jowdy erupted for a career-high 28 points on 12-of-18 shooting, but the Swarthmore College women's basketball team (3-11, 2-7 CC) fell 63-69 to the McDaniel Green Terror (12-3, 7-1 CC) on Saturday, Jan. 16.

Jowdy completed the double-double with 10 boards as the Garnet outrebounded their opponents by a 47-32 margin with 20 of the 47 coming on the offensive glass. Bridget Scott collected 11 rebounds to go with seven points from the free throw line. Raina Williams and Hayley Raymond also finished with seven markers as Maggie O'Neil blocked three shots.

The Garnet jumped out to an early 8-3 lead behind six from Jowdy and a fastbreak layup from O'Neil that forced a McDaniel timeout.  Swarthmore led by as many as seven in the quarter after Jowdy sank one of three three-pointers on the afternoon, but McDaniel answered with a trey of its own on the ensuing possession to trim its deficit to 15-19.

Jowdy scored four more in the second before an 8-0 run by the Green Terror gave McDaniel its first lead of the game at 25-22. Jowdy, however, notched seven straight points to begin a 13-2 run that restored Swarthmore's advantage at 35-27. The teams traded baskets down the stretch for a 39-33 Garnet lead heading into the locker room.

In the third, Raymond hit a jumper and Scott sank a pair of free throws for a double-digit lead as Swarthmore kept McDaniel off the board for the first four minutes of the quarter. A 7-0 stretch for the Green Terror made it a one-possession game. A Jowdy trey and free throw by Williams provided a 50-45 advantage entering the fourth quarter.

McDaniel had its best offensive showing in the final period to the tune of 24 points on 7-for-10 shooting and a 9-of-12 mark from the line. Abbey Deckard scored five for the Garnet, which trailed by only four with 35 seconds remaining. The Green Terror, however, hit four free throws down the stretch to put the game out of reach.

Swarthmore looks to snap an eight-game losing streak when it travels to nationally-ranked Muhlenberg on Wednesday, Jan .20. The game, which is the first of a three-game road trip, is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
