Volleyball Splits on Final Day of Haverford/Swarthmore Invite

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College volleyball team (2-3) fell in four sets to Stevenson University, but bounced back with a 3-0 win over SUNY-New Paltz on the final day of the Haverford/Swarthmore Invite. Sophomore Sarah Wallace was named to the All-Tournament Team and finished with 26 kills and 22 digs in the two matches.

Carnegie Mellon University was crowned the winner of the invite after winning all four of its matches on the weekend.

The Garnet fell 25-18, 16-25, 19-25, 19-25 to the Mustangs despite taking the first behind a strong .425 hitting percentage. Swarthmore led by as many as 13 points in the frame and never trailed. Stevenson, however, regained momentum in the second and used its improved attack to even the match at one set apiece.

The Mustangs raced out to a double-digit lead in the third frame and led 17-9 before an eight-point run, punctuated by two service aces from senior Madison Heppe, brought the Garnet back into the set. Stevenson, however, took eight of the next 10 points to take a 2-1 set lead.

In the fourth, the back-and forth action favored the visitors, who improved to 3-1 on the season with the win. Freshman Sarah Girard posted a match-high 28 digs for Swarthmore as Wallace and sophomore Malia Scott also finished in double figures with 14 and 16, respectively. Scott narrowly missed out a double-double with nine successful attacks as Olivia Leventhal swung a team-high 16 kills.

The Garnet recovered quickly with a sweep of the SUNY-New Paltz Hawks by a 25-11, 25-17, 25-13 score and avenged two of its losses from the 2014 season. Swarthmore won the first eight points to open the match and enjoyed a comfortable lead for the entirety of the set. The team recorded 14 kills and only two errors on 29 attempts for a .414 hitting percentage.

The Hawks put up a stronger fight in the second frame, but the result was the same as the Garnet attack continued to overwhelm the visitors. Swarthmore used two five-point runs in the third set to close New Paltz and complete the sweep.

Senior Sam DuBois had a complete stat line with 24 assists, six digs, five kills, and four block assists. Swarthmore's front line finished with five total blocks as sophomore Alice Liu recorded one solo block and one block assist and Olivia Leventhal had two in the latter category.

The team will return to competiition on Saturday, Sept. 12 at the Greensboro College Invitational in Greensboro, N.C. with first-day matches against West Virginia Wesleyan and Greensboro College.
