GREENSBORO, N.C. – Sophomore
Olivia Leventhal recorded 28 kills and had a .444 hitting percentage as the Swarthmore College volleyball team picked up a 3-1 win over West Virginia Wesleyan and swept Greensboro in straight sets on day one of the Greensboro Invitational.
The Garnet overcame a slow start in their first match against the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats and won by a 24-26, 25-9, 25-19, 25-15 score.
After falling in the first set, Swarthmore used an 11-point run in the middle of the second to take a 17-3 lead and assume full control of the set. The team recorded 12 kills and an only one error for a hitting percentage of .550 while limiting the Bobcats to -.042 on the attack.
The third set was more tightly contested and West Virginia Wesleyan threatened with a four-point run toward the end of the frame as it narrowed Swarthmore's advantage to 23-19. Consecutive attack errors, however, gave the Garnet a 2-1 lead and momentum entering the fourth set.
Swarthmore never trailed in the fourth and took seven of the first eight points as it jumped out to an early lead.
Sophomore
Malia Scott filled the box score with eight digs, seven assists, six kills, and four service aces. Classmate
Sarah Wallace notched another double-double with 15 kills and 14 digs as Leventhal swung a team-high 17 kills and posted a .342 hitting percentage. Freshman
Sarah Girard recorded 20 digs and senior
Sam DuBois handed out 34 assists to go with three service aces.
The Garnet routed the hosts by a 25-10, 25-8, 25-9 to conclude the day. Leventhal hit .688 with 11 kills and no errors while Wallace also tallied 11 kills.
Malia Scott added eight digs, five kills, and three service aces and
Bridget Scott also contributed two blocks, one solo and one assisted.
Swarthmore wraps up the invitational with matches against Ogelthorpe at 10:00 a.m. and Emory & Henry at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 13.
