Lichtenstein Nets Hat Trick As Garnet Race Past Cardinals

SWARTHMORE, Pa.—Swarthmore College Women's Soccer junior forward Hannah Lichtenstein led the Garnet to its third straight victory to start the 2015 campaign, scoring a trio of goals on Saturday versus St. John Fisher College. The Garnet downed the St. John Fisher Cardinals 6-0 and have now out-scored opponents 25-0 to start the year.

In addition to Lichtenstein's three goals, Katie Dougherty, Caroline Khanna and Emily Telford-Marx also found the back of the net.

Senior goalkeeper Reba Magier logged 64 minutes of scoreless play to earn her third straight victory. Magier recorded two saves.

The Garnet overwhelmed the Cardinals with 29 shots (18 on goal) and forced the Cardinals to play from behind for almost the entirety of the match. Lichtenstein scored the game's opening goal just 40 seconds into the contest when she dodged two defenders and snapped a shot from the left of the box that sailed through the sweet spot above the keeper's hands and just below the crossbar.

At the start of the 12th minute Lichtenstein finished her second goal of the day, pushing in a deflected shot from the doorstep.

Swarthmore went up 3-0 in the 19th minute with Telford-Marx getting a piece of an in-swung corner kick by Melissa Trofa and knocking it off a defender and in.

The score remained 3-0 in Swarthmore's favor going into the second half. Lichtenstein completed the hat trick in the 57th minute. Defender Amanda Bosworth crushed a long free kick into the box and Lichtenstein broke past the Cardinals' back line and finished the serve with a running header.

Katie Dougherty added the Garnet's fifth goal in the 68th minute after a nice cut-back move in the middle of the box. Caroline Khanna headed in the Garnet's final tally after a corner kick by Claire O'Brien.

Swarthmore looks to make it four in a row when it hosts Rowan University on Saturday at 7 p.m.
