SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Rainy conditions could not stop the offensive attack of the Swarthmore College women's soccer team (4-0) as it defeated Rowan University (3-1) by a 3-0 score on Saturday, Sept. 12. The Rowan Profs were ranked 14
th in the most recent D3soccer.com poll.
Freshman
Marin McCoy scored twice for the Garnet and junior
Hannah Lichtenstein tallied one goal and one assist. Senior
Melissa Trofa set up two goals for Swarthmore, which has outscored its opponents 28-0 to begin the season.
The Garnet jumped ahead early with McCoy's headed goal in the sixth minute. The forward received a looping pass from Lichtenstein and buried the ball after the Rowan keeper slipped on the wet turf of Clothier Field.
Swarthmore nearly doubled its advantage minutes later but two shots by Lichtenstein off of corner kicks were denied at close range.
On the other end, senior keeper
Reba Magier, who earned her first shutout of the season, kept the Garnet ahead with a point-blank save on a Rowan breakaway at 26:48. Magier finished with five saves and now has 16 career clean sheets, placing her second all-time in program history.
Amanda Bosworth,
Katherine Zavez,
Emily Telford-Marx, and
Melissa Curran were also stalwart on the backline for the Garnet, limiting the Profs to only two shots on goal in the first half.
After controlling much of the first period, Swarthmore extended its lead in the second as Trofa played a long ball to McCoy who muscled her way through the Rowan defense and lifted a shot above the head of the keeper.
Eight minutes later, Trofa set up Lichtenstein, who chipped in a goal from just outside the box to put the Garnet ahead 3-0 and complete the scoring.
The women's soccer team remains at home for a 7:00 p.m. non-conference match against Immaculata on Wednesday, Sept. 16.
