HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Swarthmore College volleyball team (1-2) suffered two setbacks on the first day of the Haverford/Swarthmore Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 5 as it fell narrowly in four sets to the Cabrini Cavaliers and lost in three to Tartans of Carnegie Mellon University (CMU).
The Garnet opened strong against the Cavaliers, taking the first set by a 25-20 score behind a .379 hitting percentage. Cabrini, however, answered with a strong attack of its own and claimed the next three sets 25-20, 25-18, and 25-22 to close out the match.
Four Swarthmore players finished in double figures for digs as senior
Madison Heppe led the way with 14, freshman
Sarah Girard recorded 12, and junior
Sarah Wallace and freshman
Elise Cummings totaled 11 and 10, respectively. Wallace completed the double-double with 12 kills and added five service aces and two solo blocks as well. Classmate
Alice Liu also notched two solo blocks and seven kills in 17 attempts.
The Garnet again kept it close in the second match against CMU, but the Tartans picked up the win by a 25-21, 25-21, 25-20 score. Girard had a team-high 12 digs and Wallace just missed out on a second double-double with eight digs and 13 kills. Senior
Sam DuBois dished out 26 assists and
Malia Scott chipped in two solo blocks, five kills, and six digs.
The Garnet are set to host the second day of the invitational on Sunday, Sept. 6. They will face Stevenson at 12 p.m. and SUNY-New Paltz at 4 p.m., two teams that participated in the 2014 NCAA Division III Tournament. Complete details of the invitational can be found
