SWARTHMORE, Pa.—Swarthmore College Men's Soccer took Cabrini College into overtime in Saturday night's matchup, but fell to the visiting Cavaliers 2-1 in the first period of extra time.
Cabrini's AJ Bishop launched the golden goal at the start of the 96th minute. Moving across the field to his left, Bishop took a shot from the top of the box towards the upper right corner of the goal. Garnet keeper
Tyler Zon was able to partially deflect it, but his parry couldn't prevent the shot from finding the back of the net.
Swarthmore and Cabrini battled through a scoreless first half. The Garnet out-shot the Cavaliers 8-4 in the first period and those figures repeated in Swarthmore's favor in the second period. However, Cabrini struck first, netting a goal from about eight yards out at the end of the 56th minute.
Swarthmore earned the chance to even the game in the 72nd minute with an awarded penalty kick. Garnet right back
Michael Swantek cut into the box to chase down a lobbed pass from defender
Ryan Meuth. Cabrini's keeper CJ Serratore collided with Swantek in midair resulting in a foul. Meuth stepped up and sank the penalty kick and knotted the score at 1-1.
The Garnet had a few chances late to take the lead, including a shot in the 89th minute when
Alex Robey laced a strong serve across to the far post, but
Tommy Sheehan's leaping volley on the receiving end missed high.
Cabrini improved to 2-0 with the win and Swarthmore dipped to 0-2. Swarthmore gets the chance to break even in the Garnet Alumni Classic tournament on Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m. with a matchup against Kean University.
