SWARTHMORE, Pa.—Swarthmore College Men's Soccer bounced back from Saturday's overtime loss against Cabrini College with a 1-0 win over the Kean College Cougars on Sunday afternoon in the 17th Annual Garnet Alumni Classic. Freshman forward
Yuheng Wang, two minutes after checking into the game, netted the game-winner, the first goal of his young collegiate career. On the other end of the pitch, senior goalkeeper
Tyler Zon denied seven Kean shots to earn the shutout win.
Sunday's win marked the first of the year for the Garnet who had opened the season on the losing end of two physical one-goal margins. Swarthmore's scoring opportunity arrived in the 38th minute on a free kick taken by
Ryan Meuth near midfield and tight to the right sideline. Wang broke past Kean's backline and as a Kean defender attempted to clear away the pass, Wang ran through the deflection and propelled the ball into the back of the net with his face.
Wang is one of several first-year players making an immediate impact on the Garnet roster this season. The young Swarthmore squad features eight new players and 17 underclassmen. To head coach
Eric Wagner, the early season challenges have provided valuable opportunities for the team to grow moving forward. "We're young, we're raw, and we have a lot to learn," he said. "Those first two games were really good learning experiences for us, and I think a lot of that showed today. We came back out and really put together a great team effort and held on for a 1-0 victory."
Kean challenged Swarthmore in the second half, out-shooting the Garnet 6-4 in the period. Zon saved all five of the Cougars' on-target attempts to secure the seventh clean sheet of his career. Zon came up big in the match's final seconds. The Cougars drew one of the match's 42 fouls just outside of the box to set up a dangerous free kick with just 8.8 seconds to go in the game. Kean set up for one final chance to equalize the score and had a good look. Kean's Bryan Blandon fired a shot over Swarthmore's wall, but Zon met the shot and made the catch to lock up the win.
"After yesterday, everybody really wanted to respond," Zon said after the game. "As a team we decided that, you know, we're 0-2 to start the year, but we're going to come back and we're going to win today. Everybody played well and put their best foot forward."
Swarthmore returns to Clothier Field on Wednesday at 7 p.m. when they'll play the 320 Challenge Match, a rivalry game with nearby Widener University. Widener played twice at Clothier Field this weekend, losing to Kean 3-2 on Saturday and playing Cabrini to a scoreless draw on Sunday night.
