SWARTHMORE, Pa.—Swarthmore College Field Hockey hosted the No. 8 Ursinus College Bears on Wednesday afternoon in a Centennial Conference matchup. The nationally-ranked Bears attacked early and often and took the contest by a final score of 8-0.
The Bears leapt to a 3-0 in the first four minutes and extended the gap to 5-0 by the end of the 15th minute. Swarthmore regrouped and only allowed one more score the rest of the half. The Garnet created a few promising opportunities in the first half, earning four penalty corners and placing three shots on goal. Garnet senior
Erin Gluck created a breakaway opportunity in the first half with some clever stick work and burst of speed; however, Ursinus' goalkeeper intercepted her away from the goal to keep Swarthmore off the board.
The Bears had the lion's share of the scoring chances in the second half. Swarthmore freshman goalkeeper
Zelda Bank recorded 10 saves in the second half, including a "skate save" where she shot out her left foot to deny a shot on goal. Defender
Jane Blicher backed her up with a defensive save in the period.
Ursinus had three players score two goals each: Megan Keenan, Maria DiCioccio and Amber Steigerwalt.
Swarthmore hosts Johns Hopkins University on Saturday at noon.
