SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Five different players found the back of the net on Monday evening as the Swarthmore College women's soccer team (7-0) extended its win streak to seven with a 5-0 shutout of Penn State Abington. The Garnet have not allowed a goal during the 2015 season and have already reached last year's total of 49 goals through seven games.
Swarthmore outshot the visitors 48-1 with 21 shots coming on goal for the home team.
Despite a steady performance from Abington's keeper, who made five saves in the opening six minutes of the contest, the Garnet could not be denied and broke the game open in the seventh minute behind
Mele Johnson's third goal of the season. Johnson received a cross by
Miranda Saldivar from the right and slotted home the eventual game-winner.
Swarthmore doubled its lead just before halftime as
Claire O'Brien buried a long through ball from
Caroline Coats at the 41:51 mark.
In the second period, the Garnet continued on the attack and scored just over two minutes into the frame as
Caroline Khanna cleaned up a failed clearance by an Abington defender. Seven minutes later, Saldivar netted her first career goal on a header off a well-placed cross off the foot of
Katie Dougherty.
Melissa Trofa completed the scoring with a curled shot past the fingertips of the keeper from outside the box with assistance from
Melissa Curran.
Reba Magier and
Amy Shmoys combined for the clean sheet with Shmoys making a difficult save on an Abington breakaway in the 80
th minute to preserve the shutout.
Swarthmore plays its second conference game of the season when it hosts Dickinson on Saturday, Sept. 26 at 7:00 p.m.
