SWARTHMORE, Pa.—Swarthmore College Field Hockey registered the first goal of the 2015 season eight minutes into Wednesday afternoon's contest with the Widener University Pride and carried the 1-0 lead into halftime. However, Widener rallied for three goals in the second half and took the opening day game from Swarthmore 3-2.
Senior forward
Audrey Allen provided the first-half tally for the Garnet in the ninth minute.
Jordyn Bell deftly advanced the ball up the field, juked her defender and then located Allen cutting towards the middle from the right side. Allen attacked, took a shot, collected her rebound and pushed in the goal.
Swarthmore's lead remained secure through the rest of the half as goalkeeper
Ainsley Parrish and the defensive backline kept Widener's attackers away. Parrish finished with seven saves and
Kat Baryenbruch and
Julia Thomas each notched a defensive save.
Widener turned the tables with back-to-back goals in the second half, scoring in the 52nd and 53rd minutes.
Swarthmore responded in the 57th minute with a goal by
Ursula Monaghan. After a penalty corner, Monaghan finished a shot off a scrum, pushing it in from the doorstep.
Widener, however, wasted no time in returning the favor and scored the game-winning goal less than minute later, burying a shot on a rebound.
The Garnet look to bounce back on Saturday when they travel to Arcadia for a noon contest.
