ASTON, Pa. – For the second consecutive weekend, the Swarthmore College volleyball team (10-3) took home tournament honors as the Garnet claimed the title at the Neumann Knights' Invitational with Saturday wins over Salisbury and Widener. Sarah Wallace was also named MVP for the second straight tournament.
Swarthmore has won its last nine matches and has not been pushed to five sets during that stretch.
The Garnet faced a test against the Salisbury Seagulls in the first match of the day and prevailed 25-21, 21-25, 25-21, 25-20. After splitting the first two games, Salisbury threatened to take a 2-1 set lead at 19-15, but Swarthmore went on a run, winning nine of the next eleven points to battle back and pull ahead. The Garnet continued their momentum in the fourth by racing ahead to an 8-2 advantage and never looked back.
Wallace recorded 18 kills and completed the double-double with 11 digs. Swarthmore totaled a season-high nine blocks with
Sam DuBois notching one solo block and four block assists and
Bridget Scott scoring one solo and three assisted.
Sarah Girard had a team-high 30 digs and DuBois,
Malia Scott, and
Madison Heppe each tallied two service aces.
With a 3-0 record in its pool, Swarthmore advanced to the finals and swept Widener in a rematch of the 2015 season opener for both teams. The Garnet made quick work of the Pride by a 25-23, 25-6, 25-16 count and hit a blistering .609 in the second frame with 14 kills and no errors.
Wallace tabulated 18 kills and only three errors in 37 attempts for a .405 hitting percentage.
Alice Liu added five kills and DuBois had a near double-double with 25 assists and eight digs.
Malia Scott,
Christina Shincovich, and
Amanda Reed all chipped in two services in a match that lasted just over an hour.
Swarthmore begins Centennial Conference competition on Saturday, Sept. 26 at 1:00 p.m. when it hosts the Dickinson Red Devils in Tarble Pavilion.
