Volleyball Sweeps Dickinson in Conference Opener

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - After nearly three weeks on the road, the Swarthmore College volleyball team (11-3, 1-0 CC) had a successful homecoming with a 3-0 victory over Dickinson College (6-10, 0-1 CC) on Saturday, Sept. 26. The Garnet won by a score of 25-9, 25-17, 25-16 in a match that lasted just over an hour and extended their win streak to 10 matches.

Sarah Wallace hit .438 with 16 kills and only two errors in 32 attempts and completed the double-double with 10 digs. Sarah Girard and Madison Heppe also finished in double figures for digs with 15 and 10, respectively, and the Garnet used 15 service aces, including a career-high six from Malia Scott, to overwhelm the Red Devils. Bridget Scott posted three block assists as Sam DuBois, Olivia Leventhal, and Alice Liu each added two.

Swarthmore raced ahead to an early 7-0 lead in the first set behind strong serving from Malia Scott. A Dickinson timeout paused the Garnet attack, but the Red Devils never caught up and were limited by Swarthmore defense's to a -.069 hitting percentage.

The second game was more closely contested and Dickinson held on to a 13-12 advantage at the midpoint of the set. A kill by Leventhal, however, gave the ball back to Swarthmore and three consecutive aces by Malia Scott returned the momentum and the lead to the Garnet.

In the third, Swarthmore posted its best hitting percentage of the match (.262) with 16 kills and five errors in 42 total attacks.

The team continues Centennial Conference competition on Wednesday, Sept. 30 when it travels to Franklin & Marshall for a 7:00 p.m. match.

Note: The match was also the team's Faculty and Staff Appreciation Day. Several professors and College President Valerie Smith were in attendance.
